I am NOT a patient person, although I'm developing into one (slowly), thanks to my children. In my immediate family, my impatience is notorious to the degree that my dad would call me "Impatience Johnson." I always held to a lesson Grandma taught me: NEVER ask God to grant you patience because He will give you ample opportunities to learn it. Grandma always has been, above all things, practical and wise.

And yet as I've grown up, I've really begun to understand how time works. One second will always be just one second. One minute will always be sixty seconds, and so forth. Time is a constant. Sometimes, it's an asset, and sometimes, it's a liability.

Furthermore, I've come to a real epiphany on time: it does not work the same way for God as it does for us. Since He created it, He can bend its rules as He sees fit! Our job is simple: bring our needs to God, and He'll respond with His solution. In most of my circumstances, waiting for the solution has been much more difficult than realizing I had a need. Why? I want to do the work. I want to be the clever one who thought of a solution to her problem. Where's the glory due to God in that?

When we wait for God to act or answer our questions, sometimes it really does seem like forever. Realize this though: sometimes, He's just waiting for one of His other kids to be obedient and be the blessing we need them to be. We are just as responsible for the way we use our time as we are the way we use our bodies, money, belongings, etc. When we don't have an issue that needs heavenly intervention, we need to be most "in tune" with God to make sure we are doing everything we can to help others out. Just because we're doing well doesn't mean that our neighbors are!

I urge you (and myself) to be especially aware of all the opportunities we have to be a blessing. Sometimes, it just needs to be a smile and wave at the neighborhood kid who looks a little down after school. Other times, it'll be acting on a conviction that came as a result of prayer and communion with God.

The point is, we need to be using our time to enjoy God, as John Piper encourages us to, and to fulfill our commission of spreading the Gospel. This can be done through full-fledged, "legit" ministries, like being a full-time missionary, or by being a godly role model for our at-home family and church family. God calls us to serve exactly where we are. We don't have to be like Paul to be doing our godly job! Use your time well!

I've cheated a few times:
1. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I really just wanted to wear a different T-shirt, since I just kept one.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2. SuperBowl Sunday-I dug out my collegiate jersey and wore it in the name of football.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I've also adjusted my closet:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1. I removed a pair of shorts that I love but are not really in good shape anymore. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I replaced it with a (just recently purchased) skirt.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2. I gave a pair of LuLaRoe leggings that didn't fit me properly (I was experimenting with LLR's unique sizing system) to my friend and replaced them with a dressy-ish T-shirt.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Overall, I like having my narrow options. Even if I don't lay out my outfit ahead of time, I'm not in my usual "I have no idea to look cute" mindset. I've gotten braver and starting mixing prints. What do you think of this combination?

This book was exactly what I hoped it would be. Confessions of a Secular Jesus Follower: Finding Answers in Jesus for Those Who Don't Believe, by Tom Krattenmaker, is a beautiful explanation of who Jesus the Man is, what He (still) stands for, and how we can incorporate His teachings into our lives, nation, and world...without needing to believe in His divinity. I'm a Christian, and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this. I learned a lot about several of Jesus' most famous teachings.

I read about a chapter per week (exceedingly slowly for me), taking time to both absorb and tear into the information. I discussed what I learned with my early-morning walking partner, who is also a Christian. We both really appreciated looking at our beliefs from a non-Christian perspective. Krattenmaker helped us realize there's so much more to what we believe, and we are both moved to positive action in our community. Christianity is, in the end, a set of beliefs, and I believe we honor Jesus most when we model our lives on His, sharing love, showing mercy, acting justly. Jesus is a man, and as leaders go, He is the best, and I'm thankful for His love and mercy towards me.

I've shared what I've learned with others, and I'm doing my best to keep my eyes more open to the world around me. Krattenmaker is absolutely right: There's no need to believe in Jesus as a Savior in order to emulate His good works. Becoming more Jesus-like (loving your enemy, serving the marginalized, calling out the privileged/corrupt) is what more of us need to do, particularly in today's topsy-turvy world. Krattenmaker's book is making me dig deeper into the Bible passages I thought I knew so well-I love that there's always something new to learn. Confessions definitely is leading me to a closer relationship with Jesus, and I am thankful for Krattenmaker for helping open my eyes.

This book was so good, I'm having trouble deciding what to pass it along to. I'm guessing my pastor will get the first borrow-he loves reading even more than I do, and this book is right up his alley. :)
Title: The Years of Rice and Salt
Author: Kim Stanley Robinson
Genre: Fiction, Alternate History, Drama

I had a tough time with this book. It's beautifully written, and the prose really lights up the movie playing in my head. It's an alternate history starting with the Black Death and centered (mostly) in various Asian locations. You kind of hopscotch through history written by the Buddhists, Daoists, and Muslims who survived the plague (which is fitting because this was supposed to be for last year's book challenge topic "about a plague"). It's fascinating and complex and full of new ideas to explore.

However, it's difficult for me to read books that don't have a "true" ending. I'm too American in that way, I suppose. Conclude, wrap the story up, and if there must be a lingering "What happened?", then let it be just one. This novel left me with so many questions that I'm still mentally grumbling about it two days later, and I haven't been able to start my next book very successfully.

Other than that, this was enjoyable read. Let me know what you think of it.

In 2014, I attended a women's retreat with our church, and I was thoroughly unimpressed by the theme "Be-you-tiful You"...until I heard the message. Shari Braendel of Fashion Meets Faith was the speaker, and she was fantastic. If you've never had the opportunity to attend one of her seminars, please do. She has a powerful testimony, and she really opened my eyes to what I look like.

Having grown up in South Texas (farther south than Corpus Christi!), I grew up as a shorts and short-sleeved shirt kind of gal. I'm not super confident with color and trends and all that, so I kept close to the "basics." In fact, I didn't realize how plain my clothes palette was until I overheard my friend Kristina of PWC Moms (a great resource if you live in Prince William County, VA) tell my eldest daughter, "Well, honey, your mom is a black, white, and grey kind of person." I have no idea what they were talking about, but in the years since, I've discovered my closet is pretty close to Kristina's description. So you can see how Sheri's seminar was useful to me. She is sweet and funny and all about celebrating who YOU are, not in turning anyone into a fashion plate.

I bought Shari's book Help Me Jesus, I Have Nothing to Wear, which is a fun, easy read and good reference guide. Shari breaks people into general body types and makes her recommendations for best fits based on that. She also recommends color schemes based on your skin tone, hair color, and eye color. Her free color analysis will give you your color scheme. Thanks to her, I manage to look reasonably presentable on a regular basis. I still wear shirts and shorts (like today), but they're nice, well-tailored pieces that a) are comfortable and b) look nice on me. As you can see, I still like black and white.

Anyhow, the point of this post is this: Lately, Fashion Meets Faith has been advertising Shari's new online program: 27 Hangers. I haven't attended (because even though it's only $27, I can't justify the expense to myself), but the idea intrigued me. One of my friends from two moves ago wanted to do a yearly challenge with just 12 pieces of clothing. I wasn't brave enough for that. So when Shari and FMF rolled out 27 Hangers, I thought, "I can do that." So I finally did. Yesterday morning, I took every single piece of "regular" (not sweaters, jackets, etc. because they're too bulky to store) clothing out of my closet, and I was really surprised by how many clothes I have. I selected the 27 most useful pieces of clothing for this season (as you can see, I'm in shorts now but a cold front may roll through at any moment-Louisiana weather is nuts!) and hung them up dutifully. I intend to live in these 27 clothes for the next three months. If I like the challenge, then I'll go ahead and switch things up for summer and so on.

So, what did I keep? Surprisingly, 27 pieces of clothing is a lot. I have four dresses, three tunics, two leggings, two pairs of jeans, two pairs of shorts, one pair of capris, and the rest is tops. I think. That's going off the top of my head. As you can see from the picture, I'm on hold on the phone and need to be at my computer to reference the issue I'm calling about. But so far, I'm happy with my choices.

Mind you, this is "daily" clothing only. I did go through my workout clothes drawer, my personal clothes drawer, and my pajama drawer as well. I kept five pieces of workout gear and pajamas, and I won't tell you what I left in my personal drawer. We've no need to be that personal.

All the other clothes are in a bin in our storage room under the stairs. I may break, and I may not. If I make it, then I'm going to do my best to give away at least five unused pieces of clothing from the storage bin. This will be hard because I love my clothes even if I don't wear them very often. Maybe absence will make my heart even fonder of them. Who knows?

I hope to keep you updated with a weekly picture of what my 27 hangers produced. We'll play the "She wore that last week" game. LOL.

Blessings to you, my friends.

P.S. I did not receive any compensation for this post. I just really like Shari Braendel's message and hope her knowledge will be useful to you. After all, it's the new year-out with the old!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-11876864714000220972017-01-03T09:00:00.000-08:002017-01-03T10:48:54.841-08:002017 Goals<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I've kind of stopped with resolutions. My husband and I do monthly goals instead, e.g., give up alcohol or caffeine for a month. The entire family has monthly goals as well: do neighborhood clean-ups when we go for walks or volunteer somewhere together every weekend. We don't always meet our goals, but we try to have a positive impact on our world around us.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">On a personal note, I have very clear and simple goals: stay healthy (by losing a bit of weight and exercising regularly), finish gift shopping for Christmas by October (so I can focus on the real meanings of Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as being able to have fun throughout the holiday season), and reading.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Yes, a year without reading is horrible to imagine. Here's my reading list (as of now) for 2017. Currently, there are 139 books on the list. Nineteen of them are must reads for blogging purposes. The others are completely up for grabs. Ingrid of Getting Lost in the Stacks decided that this year's challenge is to get through the stacks of books that are either lying around the house or listed on our Kindles. My goal for this year is 117 books in honor of 2017. What books do you recommend from this list?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Audiobooks are denoted for me to remember they're available in that format. With my hour-plus commute most days of the week, these books are a great way to keep reading and stay off my mobile while driving.

And yes, 2017 is the year for me to catch up on my Star Wars reading. I'm a bit of a fan, and it's been waaaay too long since I spent time in a galaxy far, far away.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">(I've tried finding more current stats to make sure these numbers are still accurate, but I haven't dug any up. If you find some, let me know, please.)

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">We need to be reading, folks! Books open your mind and imagination. If nothing else, they serve as entertainment. At best, they teach you how to appreciate other people's worldviews and help you learn some compassion. Let's talk a little bit about how I read so many books for (nearly) free.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">At any rate, I'm one of those horrible people who don't buy more than five books in a year. That's an average of less than half a book per month, folks. But in 2016, I read well over 100 books. How does that work? Two words: the library. Two more words: electronic books. Two last words: my Kindle.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">There. My super secrets. Our library has a wonderful online collection via Overdrive, and I use it nearly religiously. I can check books out for 30 days, which is usually more than enough time, and if I do run out of time, I can renew easily without losing my spot. Every once in a great long while, I'll check a physical book out of the library (e.g., something super-recently released that hasn't been added to the online collection yet), but since I'm so rarely in the actual library, I don't do this very often.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you check out my previous post, you'll see that I encourage use of audiobooks. Our library's Overdrive collection has a lot of the most popular books on audio, and the narrators are typically rather wonderful. My kids and I are especially fond of David Tennant's wonderful readings of the How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell. It was his performance on those books that led me to be a Doctor Who fan, actually (yes, I'm one of those people whose first Doctor is Christopher Eccleston...I'll eventally get to the classic Doctors, but today is not the day). Last year, I loved Aziz Ansari's reading of Modern Romance and Billy Crystal's narration of Still Foolin' Em. Although listening to a book isn't quite the same as reading it, I still count audiobooks toward my annual reading totals. Listening to the news is the same as reading the news, right? Same principle here.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Finally, my Kindle. Oh, how I love my Kindle. I was a first-generation adopter way back in 2008. I spent a significant amount of graduation money on that device, and it lasted until 2013. One of my kids accidentally crunched it, but I decided to love her anyway. Now, every one of us in our fiver family has our own Kindle. The kids love theirs and take exceptionally good care of them (ages: 10, 8, 6). My husband's Kindle has been to Iraq and Afghanistan. When it isn't being used my Kindle is either on my bedside table or in my purse, ready for its next adventure. Kindle's charges last forever (forever being about two weeks for me), and they are light as can be, which means there is zero burden on my shoulders when toting it around. I want to say my Kindle has about 200 books on it right now, but I really have no idea. It's a lot. I've read many of them and intend to read most of them by the end of 2017.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you're thinking about purchasing an e-reader, I highly recommend it. Yes, you can read on your tablet, iPad, or phone. Sure. But the glare is killer. Plus, the battery dies quickly. Finally, I don't like distractions. When I get alerts on my devices, I feel that horrible compulsion to see what's going on. Then I waste time on email, Facebook, or whatever instead of using it on my book. Plus, Kindles are much lighter than tablets. This is bonus brownie points because I do not like heavy purses.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Any Kindle is going to be good. I have the basic one that is a few generations old. It's got advertisements that I ignore. Actually, most of our family's Kindles are used models. We found them at local yard sales or on Craigslist. They were super cheap and in great condition. Mine even came with Star Wars books that the owner forgot to delete. Woohoo! :) The kids and I got our Kindles for $25, used. My husband's was brand-new three years ago, and I bought it during an Amazon buy-back of old Kindles program. I think it ended up being about $45? The Kindle purchase accounts for the "almost" part of the free reading bit. Over the years, my Kindle has averaged about $8/year. Next year, it'll be even less. Yes!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Now, I said I don't buy many books every year. This is a slightly nebulous statement. I "buy" free books on Amazon every once in a long while. Sign up for an account on www.bookbub.com to get weekly notifications on discounted books. There's always at least one free book listed in your Friday email's recommended list. Also, Amazon has a lovely "Top 100 Free" list in their bestsellers section. It tends to be laden with smutty novels, but sometimes you get some real gems like Book One of the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series. Right now, there's an autobiography on Nikola Tesla and an interesting-looking sci-fi novel available for free.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Additionally, I sometimes earn credits for choosing slower shipping than the free Amazon Prime two days. I save the credits and purchase books with them. Since I didn't really spend money on them, I don't consider them true expenditures.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Finally, if you're a Prime member, then you must check out Prime Reading. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So...that's how I read so much for so little, folks. I use the tools I've got via the library and Amazon's free book opportunities. There are many, many more ways to get free books (e.g., Blogging for Books). Feel free to leave reading tips in the comments.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Disclaimer: I get tiny kick-backs from Amazon if you order from the links in this post. If you don't want that, then search for the items on your own browser. Just a tip: use smile.amazon.com to support your favorite charity. The pennies add up if you're an Amazon frequent flier. Also, I didn't get paid for the Amazon-centric post. I just really love their free books.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-3044776922139872382016-12-29T12:34:00.001-08:002016-12-29T12:34:07.909-08:002016: My Year in ReadingOh, 2016. You were a record-breaking year for me. I have been tracking the books I've read since 2011, and my old record was 109 books in one year. This year, I completed 111.

I also competed in a reading challenge with my good friend Ingrid over at Getting Lost in the Stacks. Ingrid set up a very challenging 2016 list of book topics. Click here to see the topic list. Obviously, Ingrid set it up to light my hair on fire. I'm happy to report that at this moment, I've completed 111 books this year. Crazy, I know, but I have. However, I have NOT completed the challenge-I still have three topics left to complete...and they are NOT going to be finished in the next two days. I'm okay with that. I started December with 19 books left to read, so I put a decent dent into my goal. :)

Here's my list of books read for the challenge:

The yellow highlighted books are the ones I haven't read. I'm currently working on The Years of Rice and Salt. I'm only one chapter in, though, so I doubt I'll get it done before year's end.

Also, a disclaimer: Several of the books were audiobooks. I spend about an hour in traffic every day, so I listened to books instead of the radio. A great side effect of listening to audiobooks is that it helps you stop messing with your phone while driving. :)

Yes, some of the books were very easy. (I'm looking at you, How to Talk to Girls and The BFG.) There were some I despised (Demon Mistress and <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which I'm only picking on because I want the next book in the Song of Fire and Ice series). There were sad ones (We Need to Talk About Kevin), funny ones (Modern Romance), and books full of hope (Esperanza Rising). Of course, there were many that I absolutely loved: Hillbilly Elegy, Wine and War, The Martian, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Story of the Human Body).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Overall, I'm very glad I participated in this challenge. I read things I never would have considered, and I opened my eyes a bit to new genres. I discovered I'm actually rather fond of autobiographies, particularly when they're read by the authors. I also like history much more than I thought I did. Read any of the non-fiction on my list. They're well worth the time.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So, thank you, 2016. It was a great year for reading. I look forward to next year's challenge: whittle down my current reading list to less than 20 books. It's currently at about 60, so it should be doable. Buuuut...I think Ingrid has another challenge up her sleeve, and though I swore to myself I wouldn't do another complicated challenge, I probably will. Just because I love books.

Title: Batgirl at Super Hero High
Author: Lisa Yee
Genre: DC Comics, Super Hero, Audiobook

<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "brandon text" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">We listened to this book during a two-day, twelve hour road trip, and we LOVED it. The narrator did a great job keeping us (all female, ages 34, 9, 8, and 6) engaged. At certain points in the story, we paused it and discussed what was going on and what we thought would happen.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "brandon text" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "brandon text" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">My eldest is not good with "regular" reading, but listening to this Batgirl book really gripped her attention, and she not only retained more than normal, she also truly understood everything that was going on (unlike in "regular" books). This was definitely an eye-opening opportunity to me...I'll make sure she has access to audiobooks as well as text copies of books. Maybe that will help encourage her reading.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "brandon text" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "brandon text" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Back to the book: The plot moved quickly, and the audiobook was about 4.5 hours long. We mixed up the trip with "regular" reading, a movie, creative time (drawing, coloring, Play-Doh), and listening. My nine-year-old was the one who wanted to listen to the story the most. She nailed the plot and made good hypotheses about the outcome of the story. I was entertained even though I'd brought my own audiobook for listening during the trip. I saved my book for the "other" times during the driving.
Title: The Travelers
Author: Chris Pavone
Genre: Fiction, Spy, Thriller

<span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-family: "Brandon Text", sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Travelers was as quick, involved read. The fast pace kept my interest, and I enjoyed "traveling" with Will as he worked to untangle all the messes he got himself into. Sometimes, the plot was a little too incredible, but this is a spy story-it's not supposed to be 100% believable. I imagined Jeremy Renner as Will, and that made the movie in my head even more interesting. :) Definitely worth a read.
Title: Waiting
Author: Ha Jin
Genre: Fiction, China

I really don't know why I do it to myself. Chinese novels (and many of their movies) are lovely and breath-taking, but they always leave me feeling mildly morose. On the bright side, I bounce back by realizing just how blessed I am to leave in America, where being positive is practically a national sport. I also remember to be grateful for my many, many freedoms here. This novel, set in 70s and 80s China, provided a stark reminder of just how wonderful freedom is.

Waiting is about a man, Lin Kong, who spends his life -you guessed it- waiting for things to happen. He is passive and allows everything to more or less bowl him over. Once he realizes how good the things he let go of were, it's far too late to recover them. He is a pitiable man, one who doesn't know his own self well enough to help himself in any way.

I was far more interested in the woman of the story: Shuyu, Lin's wife, and Manna, Lin's girlfriend. They are so polarly opposite and yet so very, very strong. They work, and they wait, and they live in a way Lin cannot.

I read this book for my reading challenge's topic "A National Book Award Winner". It was Jin did a lovely job crafting this novel, fleshing his characters well and giving us intriguing landscapes and settings to consider. I recommend this, but it's not a light read. It'll take some time and thought to truly absorb.
Title: The Book of Unknown Americans
Author: Cristina Henríquez
Genre: Fiction, Immigration

Oh. My. Goodness. Can I tell you how much I loved this book? My parents came here from Mexico before I was born. Our story is much different from those of the characters in this book because technically, my dad was an American born in Mexico. However, they settled in a border city because being too far from Mexico just left them both unsettled. Go to a border town-they truly are different worlds. But I digress. This book gave me just a little peek at what my mom (who was a "full-fledged" Mexican until 2001, when she became a naturalized citizen) must have gone through when she arrived here in the States. Even in border towns, where there is more sympathy and acceptance for recent arrivals, people can still be awful to one another.

In this particular book, Henríquez weaves together a tale of many families or people who have come to the U.S. from Latin American countries for a variety of reasons. It's set in a run-down apartment building in Delaware, of all places. Their voices are real, and they're full of life, hope, and pain. I am NOT a cry-baby (though if you ask my older brother, he'd probably bring up all kinds of stories to the contrary), but this book had me crying from laughter and crying from sadness.

Henríquez is a brilliant author, bringing her characters to life with such tenderness and true-to-life experiences. Their voices shine beautifully through their words, and really, I just wanted to give so many of them the hugs they desperately needed.

My recommendation: If books move you, have a box of tissues nearby. Otherwise, you'll have to use your shirt or your bedspread (which was not greatly appreciated by anyone who jumped into mama's bed that night). Definitely a book to add to your reading list for the year.

Title: Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food
Author: Paul Greenberg
Genre: Non-fiction, awareness

Ah, stories of why we do things and how we can improve. I read this for my book challenge's "Story about an animal" category. Four Fish tells all about how humans came to focus on cod, salmon, bass, and tuna...and how we're depleting our sources by pretending the ocean will never run out of fish.

First, I was fascinated by a concept Greenberg introduced. Humanity, particularly the western peoples, has boiled all the potential meat food sources to four animals from each of the major groups. For fish, see previous paragraph. Land animals: cows, goats, pigs, and sheep. Fowl: chicken, duck, turkey, and...Shucks, I can't remember, and I already returned the book to my library. But still, isn't that crazy? I'd never noticed that about my diet. Moving along.

While my undergrad degree is in oceanography, I'm not particularly keen on fishing. I like to look at fish in aquariums and eat them, but other than that, they don't interest me. I'm more into how the currents affect the way they swim and where they go and all that other dorky stuff. So this book was a bit of a stretch for me, but this year's reading challenge is all about stretching those wings.

Naturally, I was fascinated. Greenberg does an excellent job of engaging his audience and drawing us in. I felt the plight of the poor, overfished tuna and of the salmon who can no longer make their runs because of dams a little too deeply. What I liked best is that Greenberg did NOT spend his book complaining. He explained, he described, and he offered solutions. Thanks to him, I'm going to be trying out a whole bunch of new, sustainable fish (if I can find them). Vote with your dollars and your plates, folks!

This book is for you if you:
a.) need a reference on the plight of overfishing,
b.) care for the environment, particularly that of the ocean and its critters, or
c.) want to learn more about why you eat what you do.

What do you think about this fish tale?
Title: The Mapmaker's Children

Author: Sarah McCoy

Genre: Fiction, Historical (Civil War)

I really enjoyed this book, which surprised me. Typically, I'm not a huge fan of Civil War novels: they're bloody, they're heartbreaking, and they fill me with immense national shame. "Slavery is WRONG," I want to yell at everyone. I'm so glad we're done with slavery. Now on to equal rights! We're still working on that, but the fact that we're working is positive, and I pray we can see a day where our children will look at all people and say, "They're people, and we're all different, and it's cool because their moms cook awesome food and their accents are fun to listen to." Or something like that. But before I start on my "everyone is awesome so get over the differences" rant, let's talk about The Mapmaker's Children.

Typically, I'm not a fan of John Brown. I admire his pluck and courage, but I do not support the violent actions he took at Harper's Ferry. Talk about the wrong way to start a rebellion. If you're going to do something that drastic, be sure it's going to succeed! Anyhow, our Civil War era protagonist is Sarah Brown, John's daughter. I like her a lot. She is everything you'd want a forward-looking young lady to be: not hung up on love, devoted to a cause, brave, and willing to speak out on her beliefs. She is an active participant in the Underground Railroad, working hard to get concealed maps to conductors and slaves during the turbulent 1850s and 1860s era. Read the book; I'm not going to spoil her story here.

Since this book shifts between 1859-1864 and 2014, our modern-era protagonist is Eden. I did not care for her at first. She definitely had to grow on me. The supporting ensemble of characters were much more interesting and less whiny. Of course, we have a lot to learn about Eden, so there's plenty of opportunity to figure out why she's whining. Eden's stake in this novel starts with her moving into an historic home and discovering a bizarre doll head in her cellar. It turns out her home was part of the Underground Railroad, and the more Eden learns about her house, the more she learns about herself.

This book was a quick read for me. I hope you'll enjoy it. Post a comment and let me know what you thought!

Place: King Spa
Location: Chicago, IL

My husband and I got a Groupon for this AWESOME place when we saw it advertised on Facebook. We'd never realized that it was less than a mile from our home, and we regret it so much! We're getting ready to move (again) in just a few weeks, so we can't take advantage of it too many more times. It's a shame because there are year-long subscriptions, and we would have jumped on that in a heartbeat.

Oh, well. Suffice to say, we LOVED this place. There are eight steam rooms, and the whole point of the place is to relax. We sat and enjoyed letting the hours slip by while breathing the warm, moist air. It worked wonders on my sore throat. I went home almost completely healed. Hooray!

The tubs (separated by gender) were very relaxing. It was a little awkward stripping down to my birthday suit with so many strangers, but I got over it pretty quickly. There were three temperatures of tubs: HOT, warm, and ICY. I jumped from one to the other in intervals and followed it up by sitting in the steam room. Then I showered and did it all over again.

Hydration-wise: There were several water fountains and water coolers. You will not dehydrate unless you don't pay attention to your body.

Food-wise, there was a Korean restaurant inside. We had delicious meals that were light but filling.

King Spa is also located in Dallas. If you're anywhere near one, GO THERE! You'll probably find a Groupon or Living Social coupon somewhere, and it's well worth the experience. Enjoy!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-15928377812914649492016-02-20T13:09:00.002-08:002016-02-20T13:09:49.078-08:00Islam: A Short History

Title: Islam: A Short History
Author: Karen Armstrong
Genre: Non-Fiction, Religion

Karen Armstrong is an excellent author if you want to learn a complicated subject. She breaks things down into simple parts and explains them thoroughly without making the reader feel dumb. She handles the history of Islam in a handful of chapters, going through each major period with minor sub-titular breaks.

Islam has long been a subject I wanted to know more about, but all the books I tried were just a little too involved or a little too dry. Now that I've got this one in my brain, I'll probably be able to handle the more complicated ones. Thanks, Karen Armstrong!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-35263608094130928152016-02-20T13:05:00.000-08:002016-02-20T13:05:39.298-08:00Pygmalion

Title: Pygmalion
Author: George Bernard Shaw
Genre: Play

Oh, George Bernard Shaw. I just love reading his plays. They're snappy and witty and fun.

This, of course, is the play on which My Fair Lady is based. It is really fun. Reading Shaw's intended accents for Eliza sort of turned my mind in loops-it's such a strong, harsh language!

And the ending is much different. Shaw wrote it much differently than the movie had it. There will be no spoilers here, so read it and discover Eliza in her true sharp glory.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-18050280463957971152016-02-20T12:59:00.003-08:002016-02-20T13:00:05.788-08:00All the Light We Cannot See

Title: All the Light We Cannot See
Author: Anthony Doerr
Genre: Fiction, World War II

I finally figured out why everyone's been talking about this book. Wow, is it fantastic! I loved every minute of it. There are two points of view we read this from: a German soldier's and a blind French girl's. Doerr handles the transitions flawlessly, moving you from one mindset to another, always cleverly weaving the story like Charlotte did her webs.

I especially loved Doerr's attention to details. It was so easy for me to picture the buildings, the cities, and the people themselves. The scent of the bakery and the sea of the coast of St. Malo drifted into my mind as though I was there. This was definitely a highly sensory book, and I loved it.

Title: Twelve Years a Slave

Author: Solomon Northup

Genre: Non-fiction, Biography

Oh. My. Goodness. I read this on the heels of watching Amazing Grace (completely unplanned). I truly don't know how anyone would have read this in the 1850s and still thought slavery was an acceptable thing. Mr. Northup wrote this beautifully: he includes the joys of his life despite the wicked cruelty surrounding him in the Louisiana antebellum period. I sobbed during several chapters, hurting for him, wishing I could step into the book and cart him away to his family in New York. Definitely moving, powerful, and eye-opening.

I am so thankful slavery is no longer permissible here in the States and look forward to a day when there is no longer any slavery anywhere. Read this slowly, with purpose and compassion. Learn the horrors and work to prevent them!

Book: The Thirteenth Earl

Author: Evelyn Pryce

Genre: Romance, Mystery

This was a really quick, really easy read. This is a typical romance in that the characters weren't too deep, there was a lot of "romantic angst", and the plot sped along. For me, this was a "finish in two sittings" type of read, and although it was fairly shallow, I still enjoyed it.

There were some fun historical references to the Spiritualism movement in England that I didn't know about. Consequently, I spent some time on Wikipedia learning more about it, so hey-this book got me to learn something new!

I liked how the heroine wasn't the typical simpering lass, but she had too many "woe is me" moments for my sensibilities. Overall, the three female leads were good blends of strong and weak, and they allowed me to get through the book. The three male leads were typical of this genre: focused on one thing and good-looking.

Figuring out the plot was fun. The "cursed" earl tries to drown himself in alcohol in order to escape his sad existence. The spunky heroine falls for him against her better judgment, especially because she's been engaged to his cousin for nearly a decade. Mysterious accidents and events occur, and the heroine sets out to prove her love isn't cursed by anything other than a dastardly human.

If you're not into sex scenes, there are some pages you'll need to skip. If you are, they're rather decent-just enough to stimulate the brain, not too much that leaves you thinking "enough already".

If you're in need of some easy on the brain entertainment, The Thirteenth Earl fits the bill.

Book: A Night Without Armor
Author: Jewel
Genre: Poetry

I have been a HUGE fan of Jewel's since high school, c. 1995. I purchased this book when it was published in 1999. Sadly, it got lost some time ago during one of our many moves. I love Jewel's honest voice and how she plays with words to bring depth and richness to her ideas.

Today, I just finished listening to the audiobook version of A Night Without Armor, which is read by Jewel. I highly recommend listening to her read her poetry. Her voice lilts and deepens, and her dry, understated humor all make the words dazzle the ear. After years of listening to her music, reading her books (most recently, Never Broken: Songs are Only Half the Story), and growing up in general, I understand her poems so much better. They are beautiful for the truths and observations Jewel catches in the world around her. They evoke sadness and longing while her wit shines in the happier poems.

Read or listen to these poems slowly. Enjoy the sketches included in the book. Rewind your audiobook if you're listening. This collection is a pleasure best taken in small bits at a time.
Book: Esperanza Rising
Author: Pam Munoz Ryan
Genre: Children's
(No spoilers)

As with George, I didn't realize this was a children's book. I just looked up "book with a woman's name in it" for my annual reading challenge, and since Esperanza is a Hispanic name, I thought, "Bingo!"

This is a lovely children's book, and I can't wait for my own kids to discover it. I'm partial to it because it's got a bit of Mexican history in it. Being half Mexican, I like learning more about "that side's" history. I know a lot of American history already. :)

Esperanza starts her story as a wealthy teenager who knows nothing about the world except for what goes on in her hacienda. When her father is killed and danger comes to her mother, grandmother, and herself, Esperanza is thrust into whole new worlds: poverty, work, illness, exhaustion, America. Watching her deal with all these new experiences in 1930s California is touching.

The epilogue gives us some more insight on why this subject is so important to Pam Munoz Ryan. It's actually a dark time in American history, and very few of us realize it. Read this with your pre-teen and have fun discussing a slew of different concepts about life, privilege, work, and courage.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-52718255466295457782016-02-14T14:49:00.003-08:002016-02-14T14:49:56.507-08:00George

Book: George
Author: Alex Gino
Genre: Children's
(No spoilers)

I finished this book pretty recently. Honestly, I didn't realize it is a children's book. It was very good, though. The first three chapters put their talons in me, and I couldn't put it down until I was done. I actually wanted to re-read it, but I have a ton of books on my reading list and don't have the luxury of doing that right now.

George is moving because the narrator, a boy named George is so honest and raw. He is trying so hard to be a good person who is true to himself while preventing the people he loves most from emotional injury. Gino artfully tells the story, and I love how he put everything together at the end, moving things to good despite knowing George is going to have a tremendous uphill battle in his life.

It's an easy read if you don't dig, but I highly recommend giving George a few extra minutes to settle down and think about. Let it inspire you to look at things differently. Give yourself some time to look at any issue you're passionate about from another perspective. See if you can maybe work to resolve things peacefully or in a more loving manner. All people are different, all people want to be respected. How can we honor that while clinging to our own morals?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8789180231246356660.post-67362715184172462782016-02-10T06:37:00.000-08:002016-02-10T06:37:10.687-08:00Return of MeWell, it's been years. I don't know what I've done with myself other than go through two deployments, homeschool our kids, move several times, and love my husband.

I'm embarking on a new adventure: Professional Reading. Since my annual goals always include something about reading at least eight books a month, I figured it was finally time to get serious. It's not paid or anything, but I'll be sharing my reading views with the world. Tell me what books you recommend, and I'll add it to the list (it's about 100 strong right now, so it may take a little while!).
I've always detested political science (my worst class in college) and government (my worst in high school). Not that the subjects are hard, not at all. I simply find them difficult to study because nothing in the system seems to work quite as properly as it should once people are added to it. When alleged Christian politicians are being recorded making horrific, personal statements against people in authority, that's just wrong.

Titus 3:1-2 Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing humility to all.

Professionally pointing out documented flaws (in that particular party's belief system) in another politician's actions, I can handle. The verbal backstabbing and poison darts, not so much. It's immature, unnecessary, and embarrassing on an international scale.

Furthermore, it seems that every year I get farther and farther away from each of the political parties. There is nobody to represent me properly, and I balk at voting for someone just for the sake of "not wasting my vote". It's not really being wasted if the politician isn't going to represent me anyway.

The problem has been on my mind for awhile: what exactly do I want from my political representative? There's the [major] rub. I want a Christian who doesn't run on a Christian platform. When did the Republican party become the "Christian" party? Doesn't anyone realize doing so is folly, especially when they get tangled up in sordid affairs after being elected? And what about the separation of church and state? Good heavens, part of the reason the colonists revolted against England because we were tired of being told what, who, and how to believe in something. I love Jesus, I really do. Because of Him, I will never run for any public office. I just don't want to go there. But if a Christian feels compelled to run for office, I really don't want to hear about it. Let your Christianity be seen by your lifestyle, not your campaign promises. Ostracizing 50% or more of the electorate is not a good idea in this post-Christian nation. How can your electorate trust you to truly represent them and not yourself?

As far as the "issues" go, I have nowhere to turn.

1. Abortion. I don't believe in using abortion as a birth control method. According to Planned Parenthood, 1 in 3 women has had an abortion by the age of 45, and "more than half of abortions are obtained by women under 25 years of age. In fact, 35 percent of pregnant teenagers have an abortion, according to the National Abortion Federation" (livestrong.com). So a lot of women have abortions for a myriad of reasons. But if a majority of abortions are going to happen under the age of 25, then why not make it possible for females of child-bearing age to have access to free or very reduced-price birth control? Why not make it a requirement for single women accepting any kind of government support (welfare, military, etc.)? Single mothers work hard, and they often don't have the opportunity to "get ahead" because they chose to keep their child. Preventing pregnancy is far better than the possible risk and guilt associated with ending a pregnancy.

That being said, abortions could still be available, but their use would probably be dramatically reduced on the pregnancy prevention plan.

2. Taxes. When Warren Buffett is complaining that he's not paying his fair share of taxes (he paid 17.4% on his taxable income last year), there's something going on. There's no reason average and below-average Joes and Janes should be paying 25-28% of their incomes. Make it fair, folks! Get rid of loopholes. Incentives are okay (e.g., charity, having kids), but I draw the line at the home mortgage interest deduction. That thing is costing our government a whole lot of money! Every should have a home, yes, but not everyone needs to own a home.

3. Social activities. I support helping people in need. However, there should be limits on the amount of time a person gets support. I know families who are on their fourth generation of folks on welfare. I understand that if you're poor, it's hard to break out of the system. However, there has to be an incentive to get out of it! So many people I know on welfare refuse to go to school or work because they make more money by simply hanging out at home. That's ridiculous.

Additionally, this whole unemployment paycheck for 99 weeks is insane. Two years' worth of unemployment pay does not provide anyone incentive to find a job. There are some people who genuinely need the help, of course, but there needs to be a tiered system and extra requirements for folks who are going to be drawing unemployment for that long.

In order to qualify for government assistance of any kind, there should be very rigid requirements. Drug testing (for welfare or educational assistance) and proof of actions (depending on the assistance) are two ways to get people moving toward supporting themselves. My brother's solution to welfare is simple: If after X years, adults are still on welfare, then they should be sent to work as harvesters, much like migrant workers. When did Americans get "too good" for outside work, anyway?

4. Environment. Why do you have to be a Democrat if you care about the environment? Every Christian should be clamoring for better environmental controls. Man's first job was to name the animals (Gen. 2: 19) and was even created, in part, to till the ground (Gen. 2:5). God even gave Moses laws on how to protect wild game (Deut. 22:6-7). I don't want to drill more, I want viable green options. I want the government to pour money into making green energy feasible instead of just supporting the corn industry. I want our nation to be mindful of the toxicity of our everyday objects, processes, and habits. We need local governments to provide incentives for their local businesses to change their dirty practices.

Those are my four "big" issues. The only person who could represent me properly right now is my husband, and he's tied down in his current job. Who in the world would vote for someone on that platform anyway? Christians would call us a bunch of traitors. Democrats would call us unhinged social terrorists. Republicans would call us anti-capitalist terrorists. <sigh> And so next year brings me another year in which I will be misrepresented by whoever is chosen to speak on my behalf. Grrr.

The only thing to do is act right based on my beliefs and be the change I want to see, right? Because the Bible clearly says that I need to be obedient to my authorities, and if I want them to see things my way, I need to be nice about it...which is hard for me. I'm not the nicest of people.

Challenge: If you're frustrated with your current representative's views and can find a viable alternative, then vote for the other person. If not, then start making your own changes. Research the topics you're passionate about and start writing letters to your representatives, making environmental changes, talking to people about XYZ. It's easier to find a representative if the representative knows what it is that you want.

Domestic Goddess out.
</sigh>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378810727063128397noreply@blogger.com1
